In a surprising twist for boxing enthusiasts, a former champion known for his battles against Terence Crawford, Devin Haney, and Gervonta Davis is poised to make a comeback after taking a four-year hiatus from the ring. Yuriorkis Gamboa, a name once buzzing with potential in the sport, is ready to re-enter the competitive scene. Despite his past setbacks in high-profile fights against these formidable opponents, including a defeat to Isaac Cruz in April 2022, Gamboa remains determined to make his mark once again.
Once celebrated as an Olympic Gold Medalist, Gamboa has previously held the WBA featherweight title alongside the interim lightweight title. However, he faced challenges when attempting to secure a full lightweight championship against Crawford and subsequently in his efforts against Haney and 'Tank' Davis. These encounters highlighted the hurdles he faced while vying for supremacy in the lightweight division.
Now, Gamboa is venturing into a completely different arena—Bare Knuckle Boxing (BKB). This shift comes with excitement and ambition, as the 44-year-old Cuban fighter expressed his eagerness to compete in this primal form of boxing. "Bare knuckle boxing is the oldest form of boxing. After winning an Olympic gold medal and world championships in traditional boxing, I am now focused and thrilled to pursue the title of BKB Bare Knuckle World Champion. I’m ready to demonstrate my skills and prove that I deserve to be at the pinnacle of this sport," Gamboa remarked.
Mike Vasquez, the founder of BKB, also shared his enthusiasm about Gamboa joining their ranks. "It’s an honor to welcome Yuriorkis to the bare-knuckle scene. I eagerly anticipate witnessing his exceptional skills and pedigree showcased in the trigon. We have a remarkable lineup of Cuban fighters, including our heavyweight world champion, and this year we expect even more elite fighters to join our global roster, which currently features over 200 athletes from more than 30 nations."
Details regarding Gamboa’s debut in this new discipline are anticipated to be revealed shortly. But here's where it gets controversial: can Gamboa, having faced challenges in traditional boxing, truly find success in bare-knuckle fighting? This pivot raises intriguing questions about adaptability and resilience in sports. What do you think? Will Gamboa thrive in this new format, or has he taken on too much at this stage in his career?
