A chilling account of violence and displacement has emerged from the state of Benue, Nigeria, as US Congressman Riley Moore shares his experiences during a recent visit. The stories he heard are a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis faced by Christian communities in the region.
Moore's visit to Benue State revealed a harrowing reality. He met with internally displaced persons (IDPs), many of whom were Christians driven from their homes by horrific violence. Their testimonies painted a picture of entire families wiped out, with survivors forced to flee their villages in fear.
"They told harrowing stories that will remain with me forever," Moore wrote, emphasizing the impact of these encounters.
One woman's story, in particular, shook Moore to his core. She described watching helplessly as her husband and five children were brutally killed, and she and her unborn child barely escaped with their lives. Another woman's family was murdered right in front of her, and her baby was torn from her womb. These are not just statistics; they are real people with devastating experiences.
"His family was hacked to death in front of his eyes, and his arm was permanently mangled," Moore recounted, highlighting the brutality faced by these communities.
The scale of the crisis is staggering. Over 600,000 Christians are currently living in IDP camps in Benue State, a region plagued by conflict between farming communities and armed groups. Moore believes that these Christians should be able to live in their ancestral homeland without the constant threat of genocidal Fulani attacks.
"We must draw international attention to this crisis," Moore urged, calling for global action.
During his visit, Moore met with Tiv and Catholic leaders, including Bishop Wilfred Anagbe, Bishop Isaac Dugu, and the traditional ruler of the Tiv people, James Ioruza. These discussions focused on the ongoing genocidal campaign by the Fulani in Benue State, and Moore emphasized that the US would not turn a blind eye to these experiences.
"My trip to Nigeria was very productive," Moore stated, highlighting his meetings with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and other senior officials.
The discussions centered on terrorism in the North-East and killings in the Middle Belt, issues that Moore and President Donald Trump consider priorities. Both sides examined potential security measures, and Moore commended the Nigerian government for the successful rescue of over 100 abducted Catholic schoolchildren.
"US concerns were positively received, and a joint task force between Nigeria and the US has been established," Moore noted, indicating progress.
However, he stressed that words must now translate into action. "There is still much work to be done," he added.
The visit comes at a time of heightened diplomatic tensions, with the Trump administration redesignating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over religious freedom violations. The Federal Government, however, maintains that insecurity affects all faiths and denies claims of systemic persecution of Christians.
"We must address poverty and insecurity to prevent further coups in West Africa," said Falana, highlighting the complex challenges facing the region.
