Hold onto your helmets, folks! The Indianapolis Colts might be about to make a stunning move that could shake up the NFL. In the wake of Daniel Jones's season-ending Achilles injury, the team is reportedly considering a blast from the past: Philip Rivers!
According to reports, Rivers, who has been enjoying retirement and coaching high school football, is set to work out with the Colts on Tuesday. Yes, that Philip Rivers, the same one who spent the 2020 season with the Colts.
But here's where it gets interesting. Rivers, who turns 44 on Monday, is contemplating a return to the NFL. This is a significant development, especially considering his history with the Colts' current head coach, Shane Steichen. Steichen served as the quarterbacks coach for the Chargers from 2016 to 2019, overlapping with Rivers' tenure there. They also worked together earlier, with Steichen holding various roles with the then-San Diego Chargers.
During his single season with the Colts in 2020, Rivers proved he still had what it takes, leading the team to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth, just a year after Andrew Luck's unexpected retirement. He completed 68.0 percent of his passes for 4,169 yards, with 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Rivers, drafted fourth overall in 2004, is an eight-time Pro Bowler and the 2013 AP Comeback Player of the Year. He currently ranks 7th all-time in NFL history with 63,440 passing yards and 6th with 421 career touchdown passes.
