Mac McClung, the undisputed king of the slam dunk contest, won’t be defending his title next month, according to his father, Marcus McClung, who spoke to ESPN on Monday. In a text message, Marcus revealed, “Not going to be 4 in a row. There’s no single reason—it’s more like a bunch of factors that led to this decision.” This announcement comes after McClung hinted at his withdrawal during a commercial products interview over the weekend and later confirmed it in an X post, teasing fans with the promise to release “the dunks we came up with after the contest.”
And this is the part most people miss: McClung’s decision isn’t just about the contest itself. As recently as last month, the only player to ever win three consecutive dunk titles told ESPN he was “not sure” about competing in 2026. In that interview, he openly questioned whether he had enough innovative moves to dominate again and admitted that being labeled primarily as a dunker, rather than a well-rounded player, had weighed on him in the past.
