The results are in! Last week's charts quiz stirred up quite a reaction, and it's time to unveil the answers and celebrate the winner. Published on January 12, 2026, this edition of the Editor’s Digest from Roula Khalaf, the FT's Editor, has sparked some interesting discussions. Let's dive in!
The previous quiz was a hit, with readers chiming in with comments ranging from enthusiastic to, shall we say, critical. One reader declared it "chart crime," while another suggested more preparation was needed to refine the charts.
Now, about that last chart... Yes, it was intentionally tricky! The X-labels showed 2021 twice and skipped 2025. This was due to a glitch in our chart-building software, but we decided to keep it to add an extra layer of challenge.
But here's where it gets controversial... The quiz saw a good number of participants, but few correct answers, and a dash of, let's say, strong opinions. This, according to the FT Alphaville charts quizzing, is a perfect hat-trick!
So, what were the answers?
- The first chart displayed the share price of SanDisk/Jensen Huang's latest venture.
- Next, we saw the volume of Venezuela’s self-reported oil reserves, a topic that certainly kept Alphaville away from Enya's 'Orinoco Flow' last week.
- Finally, we had the share price of Meta Materials, a stock that has gained a cult following.
And this is the part most people miss... Unfortunately, we couldn't include a price chart of its preferred shares, MMTLP. Despite the company's bankruptcy in 2024, some investors still have faith. Last week, some even held a press conference outside the SEC. This prompted Alphaville to include the chart of its common stock in the quiz.
This last one was particularly challenging. We had only two correct guesses, from Ziyodulla Abdullaev and James Ritossa. And the winner is... Congratulations to Ziyodulla, a frequent finalist, for their first win! James, your time will come!
