The UFC's recent decision to grant Diego Lopes a title shot against Alexander Volkanovski has sparked controversy and confusion among fans and fighters alike. Aljamain Sterling, a prominent contender, is among those questioning the criteria for title opportunities.
In a recent video, Sterling expressed his disbelief at Lopes' immediate rematch, especially considering Lopes' recent loss to Volkanovski. Sterling highlights the disparity between Lopes' performance and that of other contenders like Lerone Murphy, Movsar Evloev, and himself, who he believes are closer to a title shot. Sterling's frustration stems from the perception that the UFC is prioritizing popularity over merit, a shift he finds concerning.
"He’s getting the next shot. Again!" Lopes exclaimed on his YouTube channel. "He’s being allowed to get a rematch with Volkanovski, a guy who just beat him in his last fight. Volk hasn’t fought since then."
Sterling acknowledges that Lopes' opportunity is valid if the fight was close. However, he argues that Lopes' recent loss to a non-top-ranked opponent weakens his case. Sterling's criticism extends to the UFC's current approach, which he believes prioritizes popularity over merit, a departure from the organization's past values.
"I get what they’re trying to do," Sterling said. "They’re trying to get us a champion that can represent Mexico, and pretty much Brazil, too. It’s just, what is the criteria? That is all I want to know."
Sterling's concerns echo those of many fans, who have expressed backlash over the rematch. He emphasizes the importance of merit and fair opportunities, drawing a parallel to the NBA's Golden State Warriors, who, despite losing, are often favored due to their star players. Sterling concludes by questioning the UFC's decision-making process, suggesting that it is veering towards a more popular-based system, which he finds troubling for the sport's integrity.
